This interdisciplinary department in the School of Medicine provides social science and humanities perspectives on health, illness, and disease. It provides graduate instruction through its PhD program in Medical Anthropology (a joint program with UC Berkeley) and its PhD and Master’s programs in the History of Health Sciences.
The department is home to the center for Humanities and Health Sciences designed to foster intellectual interaction between students and faculty throughout the department, the four schools within UCSF, other UC Campuses, and other institutions. It is also the home department for the UC Medical Humanities Consortium, a multi-campus collaborative of faculty, students and trainees in four UC Medical Centers which supports research, teaching and publishing in the broad area of medical humanities.
